Sturt River Linear Park

Sturt River Linear Park is a flat, shady creekside trail running through Coromandel Valley, about half an hour south of Adelaide CBD. It's a 1.7km return walk along a bitumen shared-use path, which means it's accessible for prams and wheelchairs, and easy going for older dogs or anyone after a relaxed stroll rather than a bush bash.

The walk. The trail starts near Bonython Way and Main Road, following the creek line through native vegetation. Reviews consistently mention the bridges, the shady spots, and how well-marked the path is. There are park benches and picnic spots dotted along the route if your dog needs a breather or you want to stop and take in the scenery. It's genuinely pretty — the kind of trail where you forget you're in suburbia.

Leash status. On-leash only, the whole way. City of Mitcham rules require dogs on-leash at all times on shared-use paths, with a maximum lead length of 2 metres. Dogs also need to be on-leash within 5 metres of any playground equipment along the route. No off-leash opportunities here, so it's not the spot for a run-around.

Parking and access. There's a small free gravel car park off Shepherd Court in Coromandel Valley. By car it's roughly 25–30 minutes from Adelaide CBD via Main Road through Blackwood. Public transit technically exists via Blackwood Station, but it's a fair walk from there to the trailhead, so driving is the practical option.

Max says: It's a shared path with cyclists, so keep your lead short and stay left. A 2-metre lead isn't just the rule here — it stops you getting clotheslined by a bike.

Nearby eats. A few dog-friendly options cluster along Main Road if you want to make a morning of it. Coromandel Valley Bakery (4.6 rating) has outdoor seating. The Duck Inn at 393 Main Road (4.2 rating) is a pub with a dog-friendly deck. Joan's Pantry over in Hawthorndene (4.5 rating) also welcomes dogs in the outdoor area.

When to go. Weekends get busy between 10am and 3pm with families and cyclists sharing the path. Early mornings before 9am or weekdays are noticeably quieter and a better experience if your dog prefers a calm walk. Bins are at the key entry points, but bring your own bags just in case.
