Lily Creek Walking Circuit

The Lily Creek walking circuit and the Lily Street Environmental Reserve follow a small urban creek in Cairns North that is slowly being returned to native habitat. It is a shaded, flat on-lead walk near the northern end of the Esplanade.

Lead rules

Cairns Regional Council requires dogs on a lead unless they are inside a signed off-leash area. The nearest one is the unfenced parkland at the northern end of the Esplanade, between Smith and Lily Streets, bordered by mangroves.

The walk

Paved paths follow the creek corridor past new native plantings and riparian restoration, with plenty of birdlife. Mature trees and the mangrove fringe give patchy tropical shade, but the open grass is in full sun.

Dog water along the creek paths is limited, so carry a bowl and water. Bins are easier to find on the Esplanade side.

Getting started

Street parking is available along the northern Esplanade and nearby side streets, around Lily and Smith Streets.

Make a day of it

Stop for a coffee at Odett's Cafe Cairns or Guyala Cafe.

Walk early or late in the day. The flat ground suits dogs of any fitness, but the tropical heat and open sections make midday hard going.
