Byford Hills Trail

Byford Hills Trail is a 4 km moderate walk that starts at Karrakup in the hills above Byford, climbing from the car park to a lookout with views over the coastal plain and out towards Perth. After winter rain there is a seasonal waterfall on the route, which is the feature that keeps locals coming back. It is a Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale trail and it is dog friendly, but the lead rules here are stricter than most suburban parks for one blunt reason.

The dog setup

The route covers 4 km at a moderate grade, starting with a steep, rocky climb before settling into a loop over gravelly ground. AllTrails has it at around one to one and a half hours. Wear sturdy shoes and give a thought to your dog's paws, because the rock underfoot is sharp in places and there is no soft alternative line.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on lead the whole way. The shire lists the trail as dog friendly, but 1080 fox baiting happens in this bushland and the bait is lethal to dogs. That makes the lead non-negotiable, and it also means no sniffing detours off the track, even where the bush looks quiet.

Max: Treat the whole hillside as baited ground. On lead, on track, and no snuffling around fallen logs.

Water, terrain and hazards

There are no taps on site, so carry water for both of you. The seasonal waterfall is scenery, not a drinking source, especially outside the wetter months. The initial climb is steep and rocky and the gravel return can turn slippery after rain, so stick to the designated path rather than cutting across the granite outcrops. In warm months keep an eye out for snakes around the sunny rock shelves.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead is at 100 Beenyup Road, Karrakup, roughly 40 to 50 minutes from Perth via South Western Highway and Warrington Road. The free gravel car park at the end of Beenyup Road is small and the access road is narrow, so arrive early on weekends. Public transport does not reach the trail; driving from Byford town centre is the practical approach.

When to go

Late autumn to early spring is the strong season, when the waterfall runs and the climb stays cool. Summer mornings are workable if you start early; the exposed sections heat up fast. After heavy rain, expect slick gravel on the descent.

While you are out there
