Byford Hills Trail

Byford Hills Trail is a 4 km moderate walk that starts at Karrakup in the Byford Hills, climbing steeply from the car park to a lookout with panoramic views over the coastal plain and Perth city, plus a seasonal waterfall after winter rain. Expect around 1 to 1.5 hours on the trail, and keep dogs on lead the whole way.

The walk. The route covers 4 km with a moderate grade, starting with a steep, rocky climb before settling into a return loop over gravelly surface. Sturdy footwear matters here, for you and for your dog's paws.

The rules. The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale lists this as a dog-friendly trail, but dogs must stay on lead throughout. Part of the reason is 1080 fox baiting in the area, which is toxic to dogs, so leads are non-negotiable and there is no benefit to letting your dog explore off the path.

Water. There are no taps on site, so bring enough water for yourself and your dog. The seasonal waterfall is scenic but not a reliable drinking source, especially outside the wetter months.

Hazards. The initial climb is steep and rocky, and the gravelly return section can get slippery after rain. Stick to the designated path rather than cutting corners on the granite outcrops.

Getting there. The trailhead is at 100 Beenyup Road, Karrakup, about 40 to 50 minutes from the Perth CBD via South Western Highway and Warrington Road. There is a small, free gravel car park at the end of Beenyup Road. It is rarely full, but the access road is narrow, so arrive early on weekends. Public transport does not reach the trail directly, an Uber or taxi from Byford town centre is the practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. Refuel afterwards at COFFIX Byford, or burn off any extra energy at The Glades Fenced Dog Park or Byford Bark Park Fenced Dog Park. For an overnight stay in the area, Byford House on the Scarp is close by.

When to go. Autumn through spring is best, particularly after rain when the waterfall runs and the bushland is green. Weekends and Saturday mornings draw the biggest crowds and the most parking pressure, so a Sunday afternoon, a Tuesday, or an early weekday start gives you a quieter walk. Good for seniors who take the climb slowly, less ideal for big runners wanting off-lead freedom.
