Barron River Mouth Walk

At the southern end of Machans Beach, Beach Esplanade runs down to where the Barron River meets the Coral Sea. The draw is that Cairns Regional Council signs the beach from south of Cinderella Street to the river as a dog off-leash area, so dogs can run the last stretch under effective control.

Leads and the off-lead area

The off-lead zone starts south of Cinderella Street. North of it, follow the signs and keep the lead handy.

Off-lead does not mean near the water. The river mouth and mudflats are saltwater crocodile territory, so keep your dog well back from the water's edge.

The walk

It mixes the seawall path along the Esplanade with sand and compacted foreshore tracks. Views stretch across Trinity Bay and the sand flats, with shorebirds working the mud.

Shade is patchy and much of the route sits in full tropical sun. There is street parking near the southern end of the Esplanade and around Cinderella Street, bins along the foreshore and no dog taps, so bring water.

Max: This is croc country. Call your dog in well before the river mouth or the mudflats, every time.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon, when the sand is cooler. It suits dogs with a reliable recall, given what lives in the river.
