Werris Creek Campground

Werris Creek Campground is a free 72-hour freedom camping area on David Taylor Oval, run by Liverpool Plains Shire Council on the edge of town. Dogs are permitted, and the same park holds a council-designated off-leash area, which makes this an easy overnight stop for travelling dog owners on the Kamilaroi Highway.

Dogs at the campground

Dogs are allowed throughout the camping area on a donation-basis site with no booking system. It is an open oval shared with other campers, so keep your dog under control and cleaned up after, and keep the lead on around the toilets, showers and barbecue shelters. Council designates the northern end of David Taylor Park as an off-leash exercise area under the Companion Animals Act, with two conditions that matter here: no off-lead when the grounds are in use for organised sport or community events, and dogs stay off the playing field proper and 10 metres clear of buildings and play equipment. If a game is on, walk the perimeter on the lead instead.

The setup

The oval is flat and open, with room for caravans, motorhomes, camper trailers and big rigs. Facilities include free hot showers, clean toilets, undercover electric and gas barbecues, picnic areas and drinking water. There is no on-site manager; a donation box helps council maintain the facilities, and the maximum stay is 72 hours. A dump point sits nearby at Rosa Lee Park off Lot Street. Bring your own dog bowls and waste bags; there is no dedicated pet station.

Getting there

The campground is close to the Werris Creek town centre, and the heritage railway station precinct makes a good leashed leg-stretch, with the museum interior off limits to dogs. Tammy's on Single Street has dog-friendly footpath seating for coffee and breakfast.

Worth knowing

This suits a short stopover with a calm dog, not a long stay, and there is no fencing around the oval, so keep the lead on until you know the site is clear of traffic and other dogs.
