Ecostays

Ecostays is an off-grid cottage property on 68 acres at South Greenough, about 27km south of Geraldton, with self-contained cottages built almost entirely from recycled and upcycled materials and running on standalone solar. A private stretch of beach sits a 250-metre path from the door, and dogs are welcome, which makes it a rare genuinely pet-first escape rather than a token policy.

The dog setup

Dogs are allowed to join your stay, but the property does not have fully enclosed fencing, so your dog needs to be comfortable in an unfenced coastal bush and beach environment and settle under supervision. There is no pet fee listed across the platforms the cottages book through, but confirm pet approval with the host directly before booking, since small off-grid properties keep their own house rules that do not always reach the listings.

The vibe

The cottages are low-tech by design: queen beds, a working kitchen and laundry, ocean breezes instead of air conditioning, and recycled materials everywhere you look. It is a bring-your-own-supplies stay for a couple or solo traveller rather than a family resort, and the payoff is quiet on a scale bigger properties cannot offer. Book early for weekends, since it is a small property.

Getting there and parking

South Greenough sits off the Brand Highway south of Geraldton, with the turnoff signed for Central Greenough. Parking is at the cottage, and the beach path starts from the property. Geraldton is roughly 30 to 40 minutes north for supplies, vets and cafes.

While you're out there

The private beach is the daily draw, and the Greenough River Nature Trail a short drive north adds a change of scenery with river walks and birdlife. Historic Central Greenough Village is nearby, with Central Greenough Cafe for coffee, and Geraldton's Remi French Cafe works on a town run. If you want a caravan-park base instead, S Bend Caravan Park is in the same suburb and Geraldton Caravan Park is in town.
