Hunts Bridge Camping Area

Hunts Bridge Camping Area is a free, no-booking riverside bush camp on the Moorabool River West Branch at Morrisons, about 30 minutes south east of Ballarat, set against Bungal State Forest. Dogs are welcome, and the shallow river plus genuine bush setting make it a standout for campers travelling with one.

Dogs are permitted at the campsite, with no size limits and no fees. They must be under control, and keeping them on a lead is strongly recommended given the kangaroos, wallabies and birdlife in the forest and around the river. Do not let dogs chase wildlife, and bring your own waste bags and take every bag out with you, since there are no bins.

Worth knowing

This is a self-sufficient bush camp, not a holiday park: no toilets, no drinking water and no rubbish collection, so pack in everything and pack it all out, including a shovel or portable toilet. Wood barbecues and fire pits are provided but sites are unpowered, and you should check seasonal fire restrictions before lighting anything. Camping is first-come, first-served with no booking system.

Getting there and setting up

Access is off Elaine-Egerton Road, Morrisons VIC 3334. The upper clearing is the easy option off the road and suits tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. Lower riverside spots are reached by a very steep, bumpy track that can be 4WD-only, or on foot via stairs, so if you are towing or driving a low-clearance vehicle, camp up top and walk down. The shallow river beside the bridge is the local swimming and paddling spot.

When to go

Warmer months suit the river paddling best, but be aware that overhanging gums can drop limbs without warning, so choose your site with the canopy in mind. This is a natural river, so flow and water quality vary, and it is worth stopping your dog from drinking stagnant pools downstream.
