Smythesdale Gardens

Smythesdale Gardens is a free, donation-based public campground on the northern edge of Smythesdale, about 20 minutes south of Ballarat. It suits self-sufficient travellers with a tent, caravan or big rig, and for dog owners the big draw is location: the Woady Yaloak section of the Ballarat to Skipton Rail Trail starts at the campground, so a long, flat, leashed walk with the dog begins at your site rather than a drive away.

Dogs at the Smythesdale Gardens

Dogs are welcome across the parkland and camping area at no extra fee, with no stated size limit. The condition is strict: on a lead at all times, and this is one camp where the rule has a practical reason behind it. Kangaroos and rabbits move through the grounds regularly, and a terrier with prey drive will find that out fast. The rail trail carries the same leashed rule, and keeping it on protects the local wildlife as much as your dog. Bring your own bowls, food and treats; water taps are on site but dog supplies are not.

The place

The grounds are spacious, open and shady, with room for big rigs and extensive parking. Facilities punch above the donation price: toilets and hot showers that run to set hours, a camp kitchen and undercover picnic area with electric barbecues, fireplaces, a dump point, and a shaded playground that makes the stop work for families. Entry is by donation, contributed locally in town. Stays are for self-contained travellers; this is a campground, not a serviced park.

Pepsi: On lead here is not a suggestion. Roos come through camp at dusk and I am a terrier, so we did the rail trail twice a day on the leash instead. Great walking, flat paws-friendly surface.

Location and getting there

The gardens sit at the end of Phipps Avenue, Smythesdale, just off the Glenelg Highway between Ballarat and Skipton. From the campground, the rail trail runs south through eucalypt bush and old gold-mining country towards Scarsdale and Linton on compacted gravel that is easy on paws. Water is scarce along the trail between towns, so carry a collapsible bowl. Smythesdale's small town strip covers basics, and Ballarat is 20 minutes back for anything bigger.
