Birds Heaven Mareeba is a 10-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature retreat on Cobra Road, roughly 4 km from Mareeba's town centre on the Atherton Tablelands, with cottage accommodation, farm animals and native birdlife sharing the property. One thing to know before you plan around it: despite how some older listings describe it, this is not a place you can bring your dog.

Dogs and the sanctuary

The property's own site is clear that pets are not allowed. Birds Heaven runs as a working animal sanctuary with free-roaming donkeys, goats, pigs, peacocks and chickens alongside native wildlife, and visiting dogs are prohibited to protect them. The Stayz and Booking.com listings carry the same no-pets rule. If you are planning a Mareeba trip around a dog, treat any listing that calls this place pet-friendly as out of date and book elsewhere.

For dog owners the nearby fit is different in kind: Shady Waters Camping is the other regional option already listed here, and the Granite Gorge Nature Park bush camp on Paglietta Road takes dogs kept under control around its rock wallabies.
