The Grange on Kalgan

The Grange on Kalgan is a family-run farm stay on 12.5 acres above the Kalgan River valley, about 20 minutes from Albany in Western Australia's Great Southern. Dogs can be welcome here, but this is a call-first property, not a tick-the-pet-box booking: the host approves each dog individually before confirming.

The listing is explicit that the host needs to know your dog's breed up front, because some breeds are not considered suitable for the property, which keeps stock, gardens and wildlife in mind. Contact the host before you book and get the agreement in writing. Pet fees are not published, so ask at the same time. Be aware that some booking aggregators show conflicting information on whether dogs are accepted at all, which is exactly why a direct answer from the host is the only one that counts. If your dog does get the nod, expect on-lead common sense around the farm animals rather than free run of the property.

The place

Rooms run from the king-bed Vineyard View Room to the queen-bed Valley View Room, most with private decks looking over the valley and the small vineyard, and configurations suit couples or small families up to about four guests. The shared side of the house is a big draw: a stone fireplace in the family living area, a formal dining room, a library, a pool table and north and west verandas, with a continental breakfast of seasonal fruit served in the dining room and a glass of local Great Southern wine on arrival. The grounds carry bird-attracting gardens that draw blue fairy wrens and western rosellas, an organic orchard and vegetable garden, and farm animals including sheep, alpacas and chooks, plus kangaroos on the edges at dusk.

Out and about

The Kalgan River close by handles canoeing, fishing and swimming, and the river walk trail is one of the nicer dog-on-lead outings in the region. Back in town, HazBeanz Finestkind Coffee pours before the drive out, and The Earl of Spencer Historic Inn does dinner in Albany.
