The Earl of Spencer Historic Inn is Albany's traditional English-style pub, pouring since the late 1800s from a timber inn on Earl Street, and it is one of the town's most openly dog-welcoming venues. The spacious courtyard is where dogs settle in, with open fires to warm the room in winter and the beer garden in dappled light through summer. It opens 11:30am Monday to Thursday, later to midnight Friday and Saturday, and from 3pm on Sundays.
The dog setup
Dogs are welcome in the courtyard and, when the weather allows, the verandah, kept on lead and under control in the outdoor areas only. Staff have a track record of supplying water bowls and a friendly pat, but carrying your own travel bowl is the safe play. Friday night live music from local artists fills the room, so a noise-shy dog is better off at a weekday lunch.
The kitchen and the taps
The food is hearty British pub fare at pub scale: the famous pie and a pint, bangers and mash, slow-cooked beef cheeks, lamb shanks, pork belly and fish and chips with mushy peas. The tap list is long, Guinness included, and the wine shelf leans on Great Southern vineyards just up the road. Winter is the season for the fires and the inland feel; summer belongs to the garden.
Getting there and a walk first
The inn sits at 60 Earl Street, a short walk from the town centre, with street parking on Earl and the surrounding streets, easiest outside Friday and Saturday nights. For an off-leash run beforehand, City of Albany designates 14 dog exercise areas, and the coastal stretch of Middleton Beach allows dogs off lead with on-lead rules on the surrounding paths. Mount Melville gives a lead-on harbour walk a few minutes away.
For coffee before or after, the Dome in the old Albany Primary School and Gourmandise and Co both welcome dogs at outdoor tables, and BIG4 Middleton Beach Holiday Park is a dog-friendly base if you are staying over.
