The lead. The Earl of Spencer is a historic English-style inn from the late 1800s, and one of Albany's more openly pet-welcoming pubs. The spacious courtyard is the spot to settle in with a dog over gourmet pub food and Great Southern wines.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the courtyard, with sun and shade on offer, and verandah seating sometimes available too. Pets stay in the outdoor areas and must be on a lead and under control. Staff have a track record of bringing out water and the occasional dog treat, but bring your own water bowl to be safe.

Good to know. It is known for hearty pub meals, pies, parmis and chips, a solid tap list, and an authentic old-inn feel with fires in winter. Local artists play on Friday nights, so expect it to get busy then.

Getting there and parking. Find it at 36 Spencer Street, Albany. Street parking is on Spencer Street and the side streets, usually easy outside of Friday and Saturday nights.

Nearby with the dogs. Mount Melville is a short hop for an easy-to-moderate walk with harbour views, and the Albany foreshore is a few minutes downhill for a flat stroll. There is an off-leash dog exercise area near the corner of Reidy Drive and Warden Avenue.
