Kalgan Retreat

Kalgan Retreat is a small complex of self-contained chalets on Churchlane Road at Kalgan, about 15 minutes from Albany in WA, built around a large, secure fenced area where dogs can run off lead. For anyone travelling with an energetic dog, that enclosure is the reason to book.

Dogs at Kalgan Retreat

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, and you need to notify the retreat and agree to its doggy house rules at the time of booking. Dogs may come inside the chalets but are not allowed on carpeted areas, furniture or beds, with a $50 surcharge per room if there is evidence they have been. The booking terms also list a per dog nightly fee, a cleaning surcharge and a refundable bond, so confirm the current figures when you book.

Dogs must not be left unattended inside the chalet at any time, though the secure yard means you can leave them contained safely there while you head out sightseeing.

Pepsi: A fenced run right at your accommodation means zoomies before breakfast without loading the car first. Worth booking here just for that.

The vibe

The chalets are homely and spotlessly kept in a quiet spot with Kalgan River access close by, and there are farm animals on the property. Factor that into how your dog behaves near stock, and keep control on the walk between the car and the chalet. It suits calm indoor dogs rather than reactive ones.

While you're out there

The Luke Pen Walk along the Kalgan River is a short drive away for a longer on-lead outing, and Emu Point Cafe covers breakfast on the way to the coast. If the dates are taken, Kalgan River Caravan Park and Chalets sits nearby on the same river.
