It takes dogs in specific cabins and on nominated sites, but the booking process and seasonal closures have sharp edges that decide whether this park works for your trip at all.

Dogs at the NRMA Phillip Island

Pets are permitted in two designated cabin types, the one-bedroom Ibis and two-bedroom Sheerwater pet-friendly cabins, plus nominated caravan and camping sites with a maximum of two dogs per site. Pet-friendly cabins come with features aimed at families with dogs, including verandas. Two details do the heavy lifting here: pet bookings cannot be made online, you have to contact the park directly and approval is at the manager's discretion, and a pet waiver is signed and returned once the booking is confirmed. Fees may apply, so confirm them when you ring.

Worth knowing

The rules inside the park are strict: dogs on a lead at all times, never left unattended including inside cabins, caravans or tents, and banned from communal areas such as the camp kitchen. Bigger than the rules is the calendar. Pets are not permitted from 24 December to 1 February or over Easter, so summer and Easter holidays are out entirely if the dog is coming. One car space applies per site or cabin, and you park in your allocated spot.

The vibe

This is a full-service beachfront park: modern cabins, glamping safari tents, powered and unpowered sites, ensuite sites, a camp kitchen and a pizza oven, with direct access down to the protected bayside beach. The location is the consistent note in guest feedback, along with clean facilities and friendly service. It is roughly a two-hour drive from Melbourne.

Beaches and walks

Cowes Beach in front of the park is on-lead walking, with off-leash allowed at Ventnor Dog Beach and San Remo Dog Beach a short drive away. Around Cowes itself, the off-leash stretch between the Cowes Yacht Club and Anderson Boat Ramp allows off-lead at all times except 1 December to 31 January, when dogs must be leashed between 10am and 6pm. Note that about 60 percent of Phillip Island's beaches and reserves are conservation land managed by Phillip Island Nature Parks where dogs are prohibited outright, so read the signage at each beach entry.
