Geelong Showgrounds

Geelong Showgrounds is a working showground with a caravan and camping area at 79 Breakwater Road, Breakwater, a few minutes' drive from central Geelong. It is best known as a clean, no-fuss overnight stop, including for travellers pausing with a dog before an early Spirit of Tasmania sailing.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted on the powered and unpowered camping and caravan sites, on a lead at all times, and there is no off-lead area inside the grounds. Note your pet when you book, and there is no dedicated dog wash, so bring your own bowls.

Worth knowing

Rates run around $35 a night off peak and $45 in the peak season, and the grounds generally close to campers during October while the Royal Geelong Show is set up and run. Pre-booking online through the showgrounds camping page is essential, and sites fill around major events.

The rest of the year it is a straightforward base: showers, toilets, potable water and a dump point, with room for big rigs on gravel and grass.

Max: if you are stopping over before a ferry crossing, ring ahead on pet rules and site availability rather than assuming. Showground bookings fill fast around event weekends.

Getting there

The site sits just off Breakwater Road near St Albans Road, with on-site parking across the gravel and grass camping areas. Access from the Princes Highway side of Geelong is simple for caravans.

While you're out there

The Barwon River tracks are close by for a mostly on-lead leg stretch, and the fenced run at Belmont Dog Park is a short drive over the bridge.
