Yank takeaway

Yank Takeaway is a classic fish-and-chips shop at 1/98 Main South Road in Yankalilla, the kind of stop you make while driving the Fleurieu Peninsula. There is outdoor seating out front where a leashed dog can wait with you while the order comes up; the shop itself stays food-service only, so dogs wait outside.

The dog setup

The outdoor seating is footpath-style rather than a fenced courtyard, so keep your dog close on a short lead near the road. No dedicated water bowls are a given, so bring your own. This is a grab-and-go shop by design, and a well-behaved dog that settles at a street table while you work through butterfish with homemade tartare sauce is what the setup suits best.

Worth knowing

The menu runs the classics: fish and chips with a crunchy batter, burgers, parmys, yiros and steak sandwiches, with generous serves and fast counter service. Hours are Wednesday and Thursday 11:30am to 7:30pm, Friday and Saturday to 8pm, Sunday to 4pm, closed Monday and Tuesday, so a road-trip lunch needs one of those five days.

Getting there and parking

The shop is on Main South Road through Yankalilla, with free street parking directly out front. It is roughly 15 minutes inland from Normanville and a bit over an hour from Adelaide.

Close by with the dogs

Under the council's dog exercise rules, Normanville Beach is off-leash from 200 metres north of the jetty to the southern side of the Carrickalinga River estuary, though summer hours and the jetty zone keep dogs on lead at certain times. For another dog-welcoming table nearby, Forktree Brewing at Carrickalinga works as a beer stop after the takeaway run, or Ressies Cafe if you are heading inland towards Myponga.
