Frenchies Bistro and Brewery

Frenchies Bistro and Brewery is a French-leaning bistro and craft brewery inside The Cannery precinct on Mentmore Avenue, Rosebery, with the brewing tanks working just metres from the kitchen. It trades Tuesday to Sunday from midday, and as part of a dog-friendly precinct it is one of the better dinner options in the inner south for owners who want the dog along.

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables in the shared Cannery courtyard, an open industrial space with plenty of room for a dog to lie beside your chair. Keep them leashed and clear of the staff walkways. Water bowls appear at staff discretion rather than automatically, so pack a portable bowl and you will not be caught out. Inside is people only.

On the plate and in the glass

The beer is brewed on site, and the tap list runs from French and Belgian-inspired styles to core lagers and seasonal releases. The kitchen matches it with a produce-driven bistro menu of steak frites, garlic bread, house burgers and shared plates, and there are weekly themes such as Steak Frites Thursdays and a Sunday sitting. It fills up and gets loud on evenings and weekends, which suits a settled, sociable dog far better than a nervous one.

Frenchies is at 61 Mentmore Avenue within The Cannery, which has on-site parking plus street parking on the surrounding blocks that tightens up at weekend lunch. Buses along Botany Road put you within a short walk, and the precinct is flat and easy to cover with a dog on lead.

Max: Courtyard table beside the brew house, a bowl of fries to supervise, and every second passer-by asked for a pat. Worth the quiet-night booking.
