Oliver's - Port Macquarie

Oliver's at the Port Macquarie Gateway Service Centre is a road-trip stop, not a destination, and that is exactly its value to dog owners. The healthy fast-food chain sits at the service centre off the Oxley Highway, just up from the Pacific Highway interchange at Thrumster, so anyone heading up or down the coast can swap servo pie fare for a real breakfast or lunch without leaving the dog in the car for more than a minute.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor patio and picnic areas around the complex, but not inside the building. The service centre grounds are the strong part of the deal: park-like landscaping, sheltered picnic tables and dedicated dog drinking fountains, so water is sorted even though a travel bowl is still worth carrying to the table. One human steps inside to order at the counter while the other holds the leash, then everyone settles out front.

The menu

Oliver's built its name on fresh, organic and plant-based fast food, and the Port Macquarie store runs the full set: bacon and egg brekkie buns and a vegan version, avocado on sourdough, a breakfast pocket with hash brown and relish, and an egg and haloumi wrap for the sourdough-and-coffee crowd. Later in the day it moves to warm rice cups, noodle bowls and fresh sushi, with organic coffee, juices and smoothies alongside. Gluten-free options are marked, which is rare at highway speed.

Getting there and parking

The service centre sits on the Oxley Highway with its own signed exit from the Pacific Highway interchange, and parking is extensive and free, close to the outdoor tables. Doors run from 6am to 7pm daily. There are grassy verges around the complex perimeter for a quick leg-stretch, and the fenced Stuart Park Fenced Dog Park is a short drive toward town if the stop needs to become a proper run.

Worth knowing

Treat it as a planned reset rather than a long sit-down: order, eat at the picnic tables, water the dog at the fountains and get moving again. If the schedule allows a detour, Nobbys Beach in town gives a much better stretch of sand, and the dog-friendly cafes around Port Macquarie's centre are ten minutes away.
