VDR is a casual Vietnamese banh mi shop on Edward Street, just off The Parade in Norwood, with a lunchtime window that runs Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to about 3pm, closed Sundays. The rolls run around the fifteen dollar mark, and the crispy roast pork and combination rolls are the local favourites, backed by rice and noodle bowls and one of the better gluten-free banh mi options in Adelaide. It is quick-service and takeaway-first, and the outdoor tables out front are where dogs fit.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the footpath seating on Edward Street; there is no dog menu and no indoor option, which is no loss given most of the trade is grab-a-roll-and-go. Bring your own water bowl because none is advertised as standard, and a dog that will wait calmly while the queue moves will slot right in. The footpath is wide enough to park a dog away from the door swing.

Max: roast pork roll, footpath table, and the walk along The Parade afterward is the dessert.

Worth knowing

This is a strict weekday-and-Saturday shop, so plan the visit: a mid-morning or early-afternoon run beats the 12 to 1pm rush when the Edward Street footpath gets busy and a waiting dog has company. Meal deals with spring rolls or dim sims and a drink make it a cheap full lunch, and the rolls travel well if you would rather walk and eat.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking is usually available on Edward Street and the nearby side streets, and buses along The Parade stop a short walk away if you are coming in without the car. Norwood Oval is close by for a flat on-lead stroll after lunch, and the Parade strip itself makes an easy loop.

Close by with the dogs

The surrounding strip is thick with dog-friendly stops: Eccomi is a Norwood cafe option on the same side of the Parade precinct, Homeland Cafe covers Kent Town around the corner, and The Colonist is the neighbourhood pub when the day runs long. For a longer walk, the Maylands Peninsular Loop is a few minutes drive away.
