SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

SkyHigh Mount Dandenong is a lookout, garden and bistro complex at 26 Observatory Road, on the highest point of the ranges with a panorama that runs from the forest down to Port Phillip Bay. Unlike most lookouts, this one is openly dog friendly: the venue confirms dogs are welcome across the outdoor grounds and gardens, as long as they stay on a lead.

The dog setup

Your dog can join you on the lawns, in the English-style gardens, on the viewing platforms and on the outdoor bistro terrace, all on lead. The indoor cafe and bistro stay dog-free except for certified assistance animals. Bring your own water bowl since pet water stations are not guaranteed, and keep your dog close on the busier viewing platforms, which draw tour groups and families through the day.

What you are paying for

Entry is charged per vehicle: $5 on weekdays and $10 on weekends and public holidays, with motorbikes at $3, while walk-ins and cyclists come in free. The fee covers the grounds, which include the Secret Garden, the Giant's Chair photo spot, hedge mazes and forest walks. The bistro is known for scones with the view, plus fish and chips and family plates.

Getting there and a walk after

SkyHigh sits at the end of the scenic Ridge Road from Olinda or Mount Dandenong village, and the on-site paid parking fills on weekends and holidays, so early morning or late afternoon is the easier run. For walks nearby, skip the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in Olinda, where Parks Victoria prohibits dogs to protect the plant collections, and head instead for Mathias Track, a wide on-lead forest track past the arboretum, or the Old Olinda Golf Course, now a big off-lead dog area with views toward Silvan Dam.
