Axedale Tavern

The Axedale Tavern is a historic 1855 country pub on High Street in Axedale, halfway along the road between Bendigo and Heathcote, and it welcomes dogs into its spacious, leafy beer garden. Locals rate the kitchen highly for the pork belly and the calamari, backed by a serious wine list for a small-town pub, and there is live music some nights plus a playground on site. If you are riding or walking the O'Keefe Rail Trail, this is the obvious lunch stop with the dog.

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden, where staff are used to four legged visitors and generally put water down without being asked; there is usually a shady spot to claim in the warmer months. Indoors stays humans only, so plan on outside seating. It is a working pub garden with real foot traffic on weekends, so a lead-trained dog that settles under the table will have the easiest time. Weekday lunches are the quiet window if your dog is still learning the pub ropes.

Getting there and parking

The address is 105 High Street, Axedale, in the centre of the village about twenty minutes east of Bendigo. There is on-site parking, so no hunting for a kerbside spot, and the O'Keefe Rail Trail passes straight through town for anyone arriving under their own steam, on foot or by bike with the dog in tow.

Close by with the dogs

The O'Keefe Rail Trail is an easy on-lead stroll in either direction from the pub, and the Campaspe River reserve close by has shaded paths under river red gums for a quieter water-side walk. Worth knowing

Weekend lunch brings families and rail-trail riders through together, so keep your dog tucked close at busy times and be prepared to share the garden's attention. The tavern is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan trail lunches for Wednesday onward. Phone ahead for large groups or live music nights, when even the garden fills.
