Fitzy's is the big, historic hotel in the middle of Toowoomba City on Margaret Street, with modern pub dining, a craft beer bar and gaming. For dogs, the place to be is the rear beer garden, and the catch is the door you use to get there.

The dog setup. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden and courtyard at the rear. Dogs are not allowed inside the hotel, and they are not permitted on event days, so it pays to check ahead if there is a function on. Enter through the rear Church Street entrance rather than the main Margaret Street doors. Water bowls are often put out, but bring your own to be sure. Owners are responsible for their dog and any mess.

Good to know. The kitchen is known for modern pub food, steaks and schnitzels, with a wide craft beer list, a whiskey bar and cocktails. The atmosphere is lively, so a settled dog will cope better than an anxious one.

Getting there and parking. It is central, at 153 Margaret Street. There is on-site parking, plus paid street parking on Margaret and Church Streets.

Nearby with the dogs. Queens Park, with wide lawns and on-leash paths, is a few blocks away and makes a good walk before or after a meal.

When to go. Quieter stretches before the evening rush, and well clear of event days, suit dogs best. Aim for the courtyard early.
