Swanston Reserve is a fenced sports ground on Swanston Street in Templestowe Lower that turns into a solid off-leash space whenever it isn't booked for organised sport. It's a big, elevated stretch of grass, roughly 200 by 90 metres, with no shade to speak of.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice control at all times. Keep them leashed within 15 metres of the children's playground and barbecue area, and always when a game or training session is on, dogs aren't permitted on the sporting ground itself during play. Bring your own waste bags and use the on-site bins.

What's there. The fenced ground has a walking track around the field, a pavilion, public toilets, a barbecue shelter, picnic tables, and an adjacent playground. There's no reliable water tap or dog fountain on-site, so bring water for your dog.

Getting there. Main access is off Swanston Street, with a second entry from Alison Avenue. Street parking is generally available along Swanston Street; the nearest bus routes run along Templestowe Road, a short walk away.

Down The Rabbit Hole Cafe, about 4.8 kilometres away, has a proper dog-friendly courtyard with heaters and water bowls, worth the drive after a run here.

When to go. Wednesday night through to Friday afternoon tends to be the busiest stretch, along with Friday night into Saturday afternoon. Early weekday mornings, Sundays, and Saturday evenings are quieter. The field is unshaded, so summer afternoons get hot fast, plan around it.
