Hickey Park Fenced Dog Park is on Babarra Street in Stafford, next to the Wilston Grange AFL fields, and gives local dogs a properly fenced off-leash space on mostly flat, open grass with a mix of shade.

The rules. All dogs need valid council registration and must stay leashed until inside the fenced area, then re-leashed immediately on exit. Dogs must remain under voice or signal control even off-leash. Restricted or dangerous breeds aren't permitted, nor are female dogs in season, and any dog showing aggression must be muzzled and removed. Owners are expected to fill in any holes their dog digs.

What's there. Water fountains for dogs and owners, shaded bench seating, and waste bins near the entry and exit points.

Getting there. Access is off Stafford Road or Webster Road, with street parking on Babarra Street, though it fills up fast during AFL matches on the adjoining fields, so the fenced dog area itself stays separate from the game-day crowds. Brisbane City Council buses run along nearby Webster Road.

Nearby with the dogs. The Colour Nine Cafe in Stafford Heights is a popular dog-friendly stop, and several cafes along Stafford Road offer outdoor seating for a coffee after the park.

Check the rules on entry if you haven't been before, this one is stricter than most on registration and restricted breeds, and staff do enforce the muzzle rule for dogs that get too rough.

When to go. Saturday mornings and weekday evenings between 5 and 6.30pm are the busiest. Mid-morning weekdays or early Sunday afternoons are quieter and better suited to a timid dog.
