Elliot Springs Dog Park

Elliot Springs Dog Park sits inside Wadda Mooli Park at 30 Elliot Springs Boulevard in Julago, about 15 minutes south of Townsville on the Bruce Highway. The headline feature is full perimeter fencing, which is what turns a suburban reserve into somewhere you can actually let your dog off the lead and breathe out.

The dog setup

The off-leash enclosure is fully fenced, so dogs can run flat out without the estate roads being a factor. Water taps are on site for refilling bowls, and picnic shelters give you somewhere shaded to sit while the dogs work through their greetings. Shade inside the enclosure itself varies through the day, so time your visit around the sun rather than expecting cover.

The rules are the usual Townsville City Council off-leash conditions and they matter here: leash your dog right up to the gate and re-leash before leaving, keep your dog under effective voice control once inside, remove any dog that turns aggressive or becomes a nuisance, bin all waste, and fill in any holes before you head out. Close the gate behind you every time; the fencing only works if everyone treats it that way.

Pepsi: New dogs tend to arrive with the school run crowd around 3pm on weekdays. If yours gets overwhelmed by group entrances, go before 8am instead.

Worth knowing

Wadda Mooli Park wraps around the dog area with the broader family setup: public toilets, BBQs, a 10 metre tree house playground and a basketball hoop, plus the Bindal Ridge walking and biking trail for a leashed warm-up or cool-down. Weekend daytime is the busiest window and the enclosure fills up with regulars. Weekday mornings and evenings are quieter, which suits dogs who prefer one-on-one play.

Getting there and parking

From Townsville, head south on the Bruce Highway for roughly 15 minutes and take the exit onto Elliot Springs Boulevard into the estate. Parking is on site and ample. Public transport into Elliot Springs is limited, so plan on driving, and in the North Queensland heat aim for early morning or late afternoon so the bitumen and the sand surface stay manageable for paws.
