Proud Park Fenced Dog Park

Proud Park is a fully fenced, 24-hour off-leash dog park on the edge of Royal National Park in Helensburgh, upgraded in 2024 with a double-gate entry, shade trees and a proper water station. It is small-town in scale rather than a sprawling run, but it is secure, well kept and genuinely used by locals around the clock.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies anywhere inside the fenced boundary at any hour. Outside the fence, including the paths in, Wollongong City Council's rules require your dog to be leashed and under effective control, so do the gate work before dropping the lead.

Restricted or declared dangerous dogs are not permitted in the off-leash area. Bring your own bags even though bins sit on site, and stay inside the fence line: the park backs straight onto national park bushland rather than more suburb.

The vibe

Helensburgh is a tight village community, and this park works the same way: the same faces at the same hours, a regular morning crowd before work and an evening set after it. The 2024 upgrade shows, in the water station, the shade and the entry gates, and the ground drains well after rain compared with most of the coastal parks down the escarpment.

Because the space is contained, the crowd gets read quickly: which dogs play rough, which stay near the gate, which owners are working recall in the corner. First visits are easier here than at the big unfenced reserves, and small dogs generally hold their own without needing a separate zone.

Getting there and parking

The park sits in Helensburgh, just off the Princes Highway between the Sutherland Shire and Wollongong, with street parking nearby and the rail station within walking distance for train arrivals on the South Coast line.

Being on the Royal National Park doorstep, plenty of visitors pair the park with a bushwalk, but the walking tracks are on-lead national park territory, so the fenced ground is the only legal off-leash part of the day.

Close by with the dogs
