Chelsea Bicentennial Park Dog Off Leash Area

The Chelsea Bicentennial Park Dog Off Leash Area sits at the southern end of the park, off the eastern end of Argyle Avenue in Chelsea, on Melbourne's bayside. It is a large, mostly open off-leash space with a proper agility circuit, which is what sets it apart from a plain grass paddock. The catch worth knowing up front: the area is largely unfenced.

The dog setup

The agility circuit runs on a wood-mulch base with six obstacles including weave poles and hurdles, a good way to keep a keen dog working near you rather than roaming. There is a shelter with a table, a water tap with a dog bowl, and a gravel path threading through the space. Bags and bins are placed at key points around the area.

City of Kingston rules apply: dogs under effective control of someone over 16, a maximum of four dogs per person, no dangerous, menacing or restricted breeds, and no rushing, chasing or harassing people, dogs or wildlife. Because the ground is open, reliable recall matters here; keep a dog that bolts on a long lead until you know the space. Leads go back on outside the zone, including on park paths and near the car park.

The vibe

Early mornings, late afternoons and weekends bring the regulars, and the agility gear gives the crowd a natural focus. For a quieter run, weekday mid-mornings or early afternoons are the windows. Scope the boundaries before letting a runner off the lead the first time.

Max: weave poles, a bowl of water, and enough open grass to forget the lead exists.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Argyle Avenue and park near its eastern end, close to the off-leash zone. Chelsea Station on the Frankston line is within walking distance, and local buses run along Wells Road and Station Street. The Nepean Highway strip near the station has the closest coffee options.

Make a day of it

For a fenced alternative, Iluka Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a couple of suburbs north, and Carrum Dog Beach down the coast adds sand to the routine. Post-session coffee works at Jack The Lad in Chelsea. Note that Chelsea Beach runs its own seasonal on- and off-leash rules separate from the park, so check the Kingston foreshore signage before heading to the sand.
