The rules. Dogs must be under effective voice or hand control at all times, even though the whole area is off-leash. Keep dogs at least 2.5 metres clear of the playground, picnic tables and BBQ area, and pop the lead back on if you leave the designated off-leash zone. What's there. Open grassy space for running and socialising, an older-style playground with a slide, wooden bridge and see-saws, waste bins, and a wheelchair-accessible entrance. Getting there. On-street parking along Shawlands Avenue and the surrounding residential streets is the only option, so expect a short walk from the car on busy days. Blackburn Station on the Belgrave/Lilydale line is the closest train stop, though it's a fair walk or a short bus ride; bus routes on Blackburn Road and Canterbury Road are the more realistic public transport option.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes along Blackburn Road near Canterbury Road have outdoor seating that works for dogs, and next door in Blackburn, Aunt Billies Cafe is a short drive away for a coffee stop after the park.

When to go. Early Monday mornings, weekday evenings and weekends tend to bring the most dogs and the busiest playground crowd. Sunday evenings are the quieter option if you want the grass to yourselves. Good for a quick local off-leash stop rather than a destination trip.
