Centenary Park Dog Off Leash Area(Bentleigh East)

Centenary Park's off-leash area is the eastern side of the park near Bignell Road in Bentleigh East, a large grassed stretch with surrounding trees that has become a genuine local meeting spot for dogs and their owners.

The dog setup

Off-leash is limited to the eastern side under Glen Eira council rules, while the western side near Brady Road, which takes in the sports ground, is strictly on-leash. Dogs must go back on lead within 20 metres of the BBQ and picnic areas, the playground, the cricket nets and other sports facilities, and whenever training or sporting events are on.

Dogs need effective voice or hand control and must not bother other park users, and you are required to carry a lead at all times even when your dog is off it. Note the area is not fenced, so this is a recall-dependent ground.

The vibe

Weekday mornings and early weekday afternoons are the quietest times, while weekends and early weekday evenings bring the biggest crowds. It is mostly locals, which makes it a good one for dogs that enjoy socialising with familiar faces.

Pepsi: winter Saturday mornings mean junior soccer around the ovals, so if your dog gets overstimulated by whistles and crowds, an early or midweek visit is the calmer option.

Drinking fountains, public bins and tree shade cover the essentials, and the main playground and public toilets sit close by. The off-leash area is not lit at night, so plan visits for daylight.

Getting there and parking

The park is on Bignell Road, with free street parking along the road and a small car park near the playground. Bus routes on Centre Road are a moderate walk away if you are coming without a car.

Close by with the dogs

Bailey Reserve and Hodgson Reserve offer other off-leash options nearby. Junto Cafe in Bentleigh East welcomes dogs, and several cafes along Centre Road offer outdoor tables where a dog can settle in.
