Plantation Park Off Leash Dog Park

Plantation Park is Ayr's main recreation reserve, and Burdekin Shire Council maintains a purpose built off leash dog park inside it. For a town where the sugar cane country starts at the edge of the streets, it is the dependable daily exercise ground for local dogs: fully fenced, signed, and equipped well beyond what most small town dog parks manage.

The dog setup

The off leash area is fully fenced with separate sections for large and small dogs, so a nervous young dog can play without being bowled by the local veterans. Agility equipment gives the regulars something to train on, and the council provides water and shade inside the park, which matters in Burdekin heat where a bare paddock would be unusable by mid morning. Poo bag stations are provided at the entrance.

Council rules are the standard Queensland setup: dogs must be under effective control even off leash, which means voice control and eyes on your dog, not a phone. Bring your own bags if the station dispenser is empty, as the bays fill on fine weekends. Beyond the fenced bays, the wider reserve holds shaded picnic areas and garden walks where leashed dogs are welcome, so a visit can run from an off leash session to an on lead stroll in one outing. Parking sits along the Bruce Highway frontage near Kennedy Street, with level access from the car park to the dog park gates.

Timing is everything in this part of the tropics. Early morning and late afternoon are the working windows: locals walk before the heat builds, and the shaded bays still hold regulars through the middle of the day in the cool season. After rain, expect the usual North Queensland muddy patches near the gates and give the low spots a miss. Ayr itself is the main town of the Burdekin delta, an easy detour off the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Home Hill, and the park is a sensible leg stretcher for travellers with dogs on the drive.
