JC's Cafe

JC's Cafe is a small, family-run cafe and general store on Drysdale Street, the main strip of Brandon in the Burdekin. It opens at 5am most weekdays, which tells you the audience: canefarmers, truck drivers and shift workers after coffee before the town wakes up. The menu is hearty country cafe fare, and the footpath tables out front are where dogs are welcome.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor footpath seating, leashed and under control, in line with Queensland's rules for dogs in outdoor dining areas. Indoor seating is off limits except for assistance animals. Water bowls are not guaranteed, so bring your own, and the staff are happy to chat while you wait. It is a quick-stop kind of place rather than a long-sit destination, which suits a travelling dog fine.

The vibe

The food is comfort-driven: burgers including a steak burger, toasties, corned beef with pork gravy, pies, and a bacon and egg muffin that regulars order by habit. Coffee is fresh and there are milkshakes and house-made sweets. The store side stocks daily papers, fruit and vegetables and bread delivered from the Home Hill Bakery, so it doubles as the town's morning shop.

Getting there and parking

Drysdale Street is Brandon's main road and street parking sits directly out front. Brandon is roughly ten minutes off the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Ayr, making JC's an easy detour stop if you are road-tripping with a dog.

Close by with the dogs

Burdekin Shire's designated off-leash area is the fenced dog park at Plantation Park in Ayr, about ten minutes away, complete with agility equipment; elsewhere in the shire dogs stay on leash, and owners must remain in close attendance even in the off-leash zone.
