Basin Cafe

Basin Cafe sits by Wollongong Harbour alongside the Boat Harbour Motel, looking straight over Belmore Basin, and it has become the coffee stop of choice for dog walkers doing the loop of the basin and breakwater. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor and footpath seating with the water in view, so a morning harbour walk and breakfast can be one continuous outing.

The dog setup

Your dog joins you at the outdoor footpath tables looking over the water; the indoor area is people only. Staff are used to four-legged guests, but on busy days a water bowl is not guaranteed, so clip one to the bag if your dog drinks often. Keep the lead on by the table and out of the way of the footpath traffic, in line with the usual council rules for dogs near food areas. The alfresco seats have umbrellas for shade, which matters on a summer morning.

Worth knowing

It opens early, 6:30am to 2pm every day of the week, which makes it a genuine first-stop option before the harbour gets busy. The menu covers all-day breakfast and lunch: bacon and egg rolls, smashed avo, acai bowls, crepes and a steak sandwich, with cabinet cakes and coffee to match. Weekends fill up with the breakwater crowd, so weekday mornings are the quiet shift.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is on Wilson Street by the harbour, near the Boat Harbour Motel. Parking is available around Belmore Basin and on the surrounding streets, though it tightens up on weekends when the fish market and beach traffic arrive. On foot, the harbour paths bring you straight to the door.

Close by with the dogs

The Belmore Basin and breakwater paths run right past the door for an on-lead walk, with the lighthouse a few minutes north. For actual off-lead sand, Coniston Dog Beach Wollongong is a short drive south.
