Dark Horse Wickham

Dark Horse is a small, well-liked coffee spot at 26 Greenway Street in Wickham, tucked into the quiet backstreets and warehouse end of Newcastle's west. It runs weekday mornings only, 6am to 1pm, and is famously pet-friendly, with dogs welcome at the outdoor tables while the tradie and local crowd files through for the coffee and the bacon and egg roll.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area on lead, and water bowls are typically out for thirsty visitors. Indoors is generally reserved for service dogs only, so plan on the shaded outdoor tables. The space is compact, so keep the lead short and close when the weekday rush is on.

Worth knowing

The coffee has a loyal following and the food is a tight lineup of a popular breakfast roll, casual brunch, sandwiches, wraps and toast, with a cinnamon bun in the cabinet for the sweet tooth. It has a strong community feel, a mix of locals and tradies, and the friendly staff come up constantly in reviews. Check the cafe's Facebook or website before a weekend detour, since occasional pop-ups and hour shifts happen outside the standard weekday pattern.

Getting there and parking

It is an easy walk from Newcastle Interchange. Free street parking is available nearby but can be tight during busy weekday mornings, so arrive before the coffee peak if you are driving.

Close by with the dogs

The Throsby Creek foreshore runs close by for an on-lead stretch, and the Islington Dog Off-Leash Area on the creek at Tighes Hill is the proper off-lead destination, with wide grass, agility apparatus and creek access for a splash, open sunrise to sunset under City of Newcastle rules. The Throsby Creek foreshore trail to Newcastle Beach makes a longer on-lead walk. For other dog-friendly coffee nearby, Ground Up Espresso in Carrington and West End Cafe are both close.
