Haven Coffee - Rosebery

Haven Coffee is a specialty cafe at 7 Crewe Place in Rosebery, a few minutes' walk from Green Square station in Sydney's inner south. It pours serious espresso alongside an Asian-Western brunch menu, and it bills itself openly as pet-friendly, with the outdoor tables doing the heavy lifting for dog visitors.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the open-air street seating, where a leashed dog settles comfortably beside the table. Water bowls are available on request and the floor team is warm about canine regulars, which is half the reason the cafe has built a following in the precinct. The interior is small and cosy, so the outside tables are the practical choice for anyone with a dog, and on a warm Sydney morning a spare travel bowl is worth packing anyway.

Pepsi: Water bowl appeared before the menu, and the kimchi fried rice smell nearly finished me. Sat like a statue for a bacon rind.

Worth knowing

The iced citrus matcha gets name-checked constantly, and the kitchen works a fusion line: prawn sando, kimchi plates, chicken and waffles, and a peanut butter chilli scramble for the brave. Coffee is treated properly, with single-origin espresso at the centre. Hours run 7am to 3pm Tuesday to Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm on weekends and 9am to 2pm on Monday, and weekends fill up, so an early arrival secures the calmest table for a dog.

Getting there and parking

Rosebery's streets are an easy walk from Green Square station, and the wide footpaths between Crewe Place, Mentmore Avenue and the surrounding parks make for a tidy dog loop. Street parking in the precinct is limited and increasingly metered, so arriving on foot or by train beats circling for a spot, especially on weekends when the brunch crowd fills the block.

Make a day of it

Sweetacres Park sits close by for a green break before or after brunch, and the Beaconsfield Fenced Dog Park adds a secure off-lead run a short walk south. For a second dog-friendly coffee, Two Dogs Laughing over in Beaconsfield wears its allegiance on the sign, and Mentmore and Morley is up the road in the same precinct.
