Bittersweet Cafe Patisserie

Bittersweet Cafe Patisserie occupies the little Watonga Street shopping strip at Lighthouse Beach, and its garden courtyard makes it one of the better dog stops on this side of Port Macquarie. Come down off the beach, order coffee, and work through a cake cabinet that people drive across town for.

The dog setup

Dogs on lead are welcome in the outdoor garden courtyard, not indoors. The space is a mix of tables and lounge chairs with a water station holding bowls, and heaters stretch the courtyard season through cold mornings. Pack a lead clip and your own bowl if you want certainty on busy weekends, when the garden fills early.

Worth knowing

This is a patisserie first: a cake cupboard of lemon tarts, gluten-free options and roulades, plus savoury plates like corn fritters and a bacon and egg roll for the early crew. Breakfast and lunch run to a full cafe menu, and the coffee holds its own against anything in town. Doors open 6.30am every day, with the kitchen wrapping at 4pm on weekdays and midday on weekends, so weekend sweet-tooth runs need a morning start.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at Unit 2/48 Watonga Street in the Lighthouse Beach shops, with parking at the strip and along surrounding streets. It is a short walk from the Lighthouse Beach caravan park and the beach access tracks, which is what makes the morning dog-and-coffee loop here so easy.

Make a day of it

Lighthouse Beach itself is the bonus: under the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council rules, dogs may be off lead on the sand from Watonga Rocks south towards Lake Cathie, while the patrolled area north of the rocks is off limits. For a fenced run, the Stuart Park fenced dog park near the tennis courts is the closest council-built option. Keep dogs out of playground margins and carry bags wherever you go.
