the coffee chief(Parkdale)

The Coffee Chief is a beachside coffee van parked on the Bay Trail at Parkdale, near the yacht club and the Antibes Street car park. Everything happens outdoors on the foreshore, so dogs are welcome throughout, and it opens early: 5:30am to 11:30am Tuesday to Friday, 6:30am weekends and 6am Mondays, closing by mid-morning every day.

The dog setup

The whole setup is outdoors, including the seating beside the van and the adjacent footpath, so there is no inside-outside split to negotiate. Staff keep water bowls going and are known to add a puppacino alongside your coffee, and there are cookies and an almond croissant in the cabinet if you need more than caffeine. Bring a backup bowl anyway; on a busy morning the bowl runs dry. Note the van's Instagram is the reliable source for exact placement and hours, since a mobile setup shifts with weather and works.

The rules on the sand

The Bay Trail and all foreshore paths are on-lead at all times under City of Kingston rules. On Parkdale sand, dogs are off-lead at any hour in winter (1 April to 31 October) except 11am to 3pm when they must be on-lead. In summer (1 November to 31 March) it tightens to sunrise until 10am off-lead, a full prohibition from 10am to 7:30pm, then on-lead until sunrise. An early van visit lines up neatly with the summer off-lead window.

Getting there and parking

The van operates from the Bay Trail car park near the Parkdale Yacht Club, with ticketed parking at the Antibes Street beach car park. The trail itself is flat and sealed, so it suits prams, older dogs and a relaxed lead walk either direction along the water.

Close by with the dogs

Head north and Mentone Beach's off-lead area extends the morning, or stay in the suburb and run the legs off at Walter Galt Reserve. The Bayside Soho Coffee House is the indoor fallback for days when the van is not out.
