Ballarat Farmers Market

The Ballarat Farmers Market runs on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 9am to 1pm, at North Gardens Reserve on Zoo Drive right on the Lake Wendouree foreshore. It is a genuine dog-friendly event rather than a dog-tolerant one, with leashed dogs welcome throughout the grounds, and it makes an easy morning out of a lake walk plus a shop.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor market grounds on a secure leash. Keep them close through the stalls, because produce, cheese and plant tables do not want a curious nose and the first hour gets crowded. No dedicated water station could be confirmed, so bring your own bowl and bottle; the surrounding trees give some shade on warm mornings. If your dog finds tight spaces or noise stressful, do an early lap before the 10am rush or leave them home that week.

The vibe

Expect a big spread of local produce and artisan goods: fruit and vegetables, eggs, honey, mushrooms, meat and smallgoods, olives and cheeses, plus artisan bread and pastries, hot food vans, specialty coffee, local cider and wine. Craft stalls sell plants, flowers, homewares, art and jewellery, and there are pet supplies among them. Reviews point at the relaxed atmosphere and the quality of the local stallholders.

Getting there and parking

The market sits just off Wendouree Parade on the western shore of the lake, about two kilometres from the Ballarat CBD. Free parking is available nearby and along the surrounding streets, but it fills as the morning goes on, so aim for the 9am open. One caveat from the organisers: in severe winter weather, select markets can relocate indoors to the Ballarat Showgrounds at Mt Rowan, so check the market's website or Facebook page before heading out on a cold Saturday.

While you're out there

The foreshore trail around Lake Wendouree starts at the market gate, though the lake circuit is an on-leash walk. For off-leash time afterwards, the CE Brown Reserve fenced dog park just north of the lake has separate exercise areas and agility gear, and Victoria Park dog park is the bigger option nearby.
