Compact Cafe

Compact Cafe is a small weekday coffee spot at Unit 3/18 Phillips Drive in Kangaroo Flat, tucked among the industrial units near Bunnings, and dogs are welcome to settle outside while you order. It is a family-run local operation with a reputation for toasties and strong coffee rather than a big dine-in scene, and the footpath out front does the job for dogs.

The dog setup

Seating for dogs is outdoors, on the footpath area in front of the unit, on lead. Water bowls are often put out for visiting dogs, so bring your own just in case it is a busy morning and they are already claimed. The industrial setting means a quiet street and no cafe-door traffic, which suits a young or reactive dog far better than a busy strip.

Worth knowing

The menu is concise and done well: barista coffee, breakfast and brunch plates, famously good toasties, healthy bowls, fresh prepared foods, desserts and specialty teas, with online ordering through the cafe's own site if you want to skip the wait. It runs Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 2:30pm, and is closed on weekends, so weekday workers and tradies are the crowd.

Getting there and parking

Phillips Drive sits off the Calder Highway side of Kangaroo Flat with off-street and street parking around the units. It is a few minutes' drive from Bendigo's southern edge, and the Midland Highway corridor makes it a natural stop on the way into town.

Allingham Reserve Dog Park is the reason to come to Kangaroo Flat with a dog: a fully fenced 1.3 hectare park with double gates, separate large and small dog areas, water taps and shaded seating. After the run, Madame Jude at Golden Square is on the route back toward Bendigo, and The Golden Bean covers the city end.
