Oil & Spice Cafe and Restaurant sits at 340 Hannan Street in central Kalgoorlie, serving breakfast and lunch from Tuesday through the weekend, with dinner slots later in the week. The relaxed outdoor area out the front is where dog owners settle: dogs are allowed in the outside seating while you eat.

The dog setup

The outdoor area tucks back from the Hannan Street foot traffic, which helps with a dog that startles at passing shoppers. Keep yours leashed and close to the table since the space is shared with other diners. Bring your own water bowl rather than assume one is on hand, especially through a Goldfields summer.

The vibe

The kitchen leans on fresh, hearty plates rather than exotic ones. Poached eggs with hollandaise and spinach get repeated mentions from regulars, along with veggie fritters, good lattes and a convenient location for anyone working or shopping in the city centre. Prices stay reasonable, and there is a kids menu for families rolling deep.

Hours run 7am to 2pm Tuesday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on weekends, with the kitchen closed on Mondays.

An off-lead run first

If your dog has energy to burn before breakfast, Shepherdson Park at the corner of Piccadilly and Throssell Streets allows casual off-lead visits right in town, and Norkal Park in South Boulder is a dedicated grassed off-lead area with a water station, shade and bag dispensers under City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder rules.

Close by with the dogs

Head a couple of blocks into historic Boulder for Cafe Dharma, a family-run cafe with alfresco seating that welcomes dogs, or give your dog a run at the Arboretum dog exercise area in West Lamington.
