Muddy Waters Coffee House

Muddy Waters Coffee House is a relaxed, blues-themed local cafe at 1048 Grand Junction Road in Holden Hill, popular for its hearty breakfasts and friendly service. Dogs are welcome to join you at the outdoor tables out front, which makes it an easy stop on a north-east Adelaide morning run.

The dog setup

Seating for dogs is the footpath area at the front of the shop, on lead. Inside is generally kept for service dogs only, so plan on sitting outside in every season; the front tables catch the morning sun, which is a feature in winter and worth avoiding at 12pm in January. There is no dedicated dog menu, but the staff are known for making a fuss of regulars' dogs.

Worth knowing

The menu is classic hearty cafe fare: a small brekky and a genuinely big brekky with kransky, hash brown and grilled mushrooms, eggs benedict, omelettes and brekky bruschetta on Turkish bread. It is famous for fresh bacon and egg rolls and traditional steak sandwiches, and the coffee comes in large, strong mugs. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. Hours are 6am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 12:30pm Saturday, closed Sundays.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Grand Junction Road, with street parking along the front and side streets. It is a working cafe with quick turnover, so even at breakfast peak the wait is usually short.

Close by with the dogs

Ashley Avenue Dog Park at Ridgehaven is a short drive north, fully fenced with agility equipment, and makes a good run before breakfast. Within Holden Hill itself, Bentley Reserve is an easy on-lead stretch of grass, and First Things First Coffee is the suburb's other cafe option.
