Blacksmith Highgate

Blacksmith has been part of the Beaufort Street strip in Highgate for around a decade, and the cafe makes its dog policy plain: the outdoor seating is dog friendly, a point it has advertised to its own social media followers. It is a busy, family-oriented brunch room at 460 Beaufort Street with a seasonal menu and serious coffee.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the alfresco tables out the front; the indoor room stays humans-only. Staff are accommodating with visiting dogs - ask if you need a water bowl filled, and carry your own collapsible bowl on busy weekends. The strip gets foot traffic, so a settled dog on a short lead under the table works best.

Max: weekends here are loud, with the sandpit crowd in full voice. If your dog is noise sensitive, aim for a weekday morning instead.

Worth knowing

Opening hours run 7am to 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday, with Monday and Tuesday closed. The menu covers brunch classics with generous portions - the chilli scramble and smashed avo get the mentions - plus carrot cake and milkshakes that lean indulgent. There is a sandpit and kids' play area, so expect a family buzz. Bookings through the cafe's website are worth making for weekend brunch.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Beaufort Street between Perth and Mount Lawley, with buses running along the strip if you would rather skip the car. Street parking along Beaufort and the residential side streets is paid and competitive on weekends, so allow a few minutes. Hyde Park is a short walk east, with lakes and shaded paths for a leg-stretch before or after.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-leash run first, Jack Marks Reserve Fenced Dog Park is the closest fenced option. Lord Street Social is another dog-friendly table in Highgate, and Local and Aesthetic welcomes dogs further up Beaufort Street.
