Who is Bunker Spreckels

Who is Bunker Spreckels is a relaxed, eclectic cafe at 4/122 Ormond Road in the middle of the Elwood village strip, five minutes on foot from the Elwood Beach foreshore. It has a long-running reputation with bayside dog owners: water bowls and the odd treat are usually on hand, and the footpath tables are where the regulars settle with their dogs.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating along Ormond Road, much of it under umbrellas, on lead and settled beside your table. Staff are famously welcoming to dogs, and water bowls are frequently put out without being asked. Some listings indicate dogs have been allowed indoors as well, which is unusual for a Victorian cafe, so ask staff before heading through the door rather than assuming. If the footpath tables are full on a weekend morning, the staff will let you know how long the wait is.

The vibe and the menu

This is an all-day breakfast and lunch cafe with a loyal local following. The menu runs from poached eggs and a hash brown plate to fritters, a chicken pesto panini and poke bowls, with solid coffee and a good hot chocolate. Hours run 7am to 4pm every day, so it works for early walks and late lunches alike. Free street parking is available along Ormond Road and the surrounding streets, and the whole village strip is flat and easy to wander with a dog.

The obvious pairing is the beach: the Elwood Beach dog off leash area sits down at the foreshore end of Ormond Road, with time-of-day rules that change seasonally. The fenced run at M.O. Moran Reserve is nearby for off-lead time, and the Bay Trail to Sandringham makes an easy on-lead walk to build the cafe visit around.
