Coogee Courtyard

Coogee Courtyard is a family-run, licensed al fresco cafe at 1/260 Coogee Bay Rd, open since 2011 and one of the more genuinely dog-welcoming spots in the area. The courtyard itself is the reason to pick it over a footpath table down the road: calmer, more sheltered and easier to manage with a lead.

The dog setup

The main dog spot is the outdoor courtyard, which is quieter than kerbside seating and keeps your dog away from the footpath traffic on Coogee Bay Road. Regular reviews report dogs are also allowed inside, which is unusual for the eastern beaches, though the courtyard is the natural choice on a warm day. Service is at the table rather than by QR code, so you are not juggling a phone in one hand and a lead in the other.

Water arrives on request, and the morning crowd is dog-heavy anyway, so staff are used to four-legged regulars. Weekend mornings fill the courtyard fast, which is the one downside of a genuinely popular local cafe.

The vibe

Locally roasted, organic and fair-trade coffee, wholesome breakfasts and lunches, and a solid vegetarian and vegan spread. It opens very early, around 5:15am on weekdays, which makes it the natural post-dawn-walk coffee before the beach crowd wakes up. Beer and wine are on pour for longer lunches, and the long table out the back keeps groups and their dogs together.

Getting there

Street parking runs along Coogee Bay Road and the nearby streets, busy on weekends. Buses run straight along Coogee Bay Road, so arriving by bus and walking the last stretch with the dog is often easier than parking.

Make a morning of it

The beach and the coastal walkway are a short stroll away, and the Grant Reserve Walk links the headland south of the bay. For an off-lead run first, the Coogee Dog Park is the local exercise spot, and the early opening here makes it easy to finish the loop with coffee before 8am.
