The short version. Coogee Courtyard is a family-run, licensed al fresco cafe at 1/260 Coogee Bay Rd, open since 2011 and one of the more genuinely dog-welcoming spots in the area. The courtyard setting is the reason to pick it over a footpath table down the road.

The dog setup. The main dog spot is the outdoor courtyard, which is calmer and more sheltered than kerbside seating. Regular reviews report dogs are also allowed inside, which is unusual, though the courtyard is the natural choice on a warm day. Table service rather than QR ordering, so you are not juggling a phone and a lead.

Good to know. Locally roasted, organic and fair-trade coffee, wholesome breakfasts and lunches, and a solid vegetarian and vegan spread. It opens very early, around 5:15am on weekdays, which suits a post-dawn-walk coffee. Beer and wine are on for longer lunches.

Getting there. Street parking on Coogee Bay Road and nearby streets, busy on weekends. Buses run along Coogee Bay Road.

Make a morning of it. The beach and the coastal walkway are a short stroll away, and Waverley Cemetery to the north is a scenic on-leash walk. The early opening is the trick if you want the courtyard quiet.
