Birdcage Altona Cafe

The Birdcage sits on Harrington Square in the middle of Altona's cafe strip, trading 7am to 3pm on weekdays and from 8am on weekends. The menu is the reason people cross suburbs for it: poached eggs and turkish eggs at the quality end, a stacked smashed avo, fritters, a chicken burger and a serious steak sandwich, with a dirty chai on the drinks list that has its own following.

Dogs are reported to be welcome at the outdoor seating that wraps around the square, with reviewers mentioning dog water bowls put out without being asked. The square setup does half the work: your dog gets a patch of pavement and a view of the neighbourhood foot traffic while you work through the menu. Leash on, dog settled clear of the chair legs, and the table next door's toastie stays safe.

The vibe

This is a proper local kitchen, busy with weekend brunch lines and a steady weekday regular flow, and the staff get consistent praise in reviews for keeping things moving. The outdoor tables are the dog zone and the best people-watching seats in the square anyway, so nobody is being exiled. Street parking around Harrington Square and the side streets is workable, though Saturday brunch hours need a small lap around the block.

Altona rewards the full day out.
