Logans Beach

Logans Beach sits on the Hopkins River side of Warrnambool and is one of the few stretches on this foreshore where dogs can run free all year round. Warrnambool City Council designates it an off-lead area in every season, which makes it the reliable pick when the summer restrictions close off other parts of the coast, and the winter whale season draws extra visitors to the platform above the beach. Access is off Logans Beach Rd on the town's east side, with the dune path from the car area taking only a few minutes.

Leash status

Off-lead year-round, but under the council's rules dogs must stay under effective control, you need to carry a leash with you, and waste has to be removed. The contrast matters: the main beach from Flume to the Breakwater, Blue Hole Reserve and the Hopkins River frontage all carry summer on-leash or no-dog rules, so don't assume the whole foreshore is open. Keep your dog on this stretch and check signage if you wander east towards the river mouth, where the boundaries change with the seasons.

Water and terrain

The beach is open ocean sand with the Hopkins River running alongside, so expect some current around the mouth after rain and keep an eye on swell days. The sand is soft and good for a proper run, and the dune path from the car area is short. It can be breezy out on the point, which the dogs rarely mind, and the tide line leaves plenty of firm sand for a fast lap even at high water.

Winter mornings are the quietest and the whale watching makes them worth the cold, while summer afternoons fill with swimmers heading for the river side. Afterwards, the Victoria Park Community Dog Park is a fenced fallback if the surf is up, Proudfoots By The River handles a post-swim meal, and Logans Beach Apartments put you within walking distance of the sand. Parking sits near the whale viewing area, and the short walk down means sandy dogs are back at the car within minutes.
