Stanwell Park Beach Off-Leash Green Zone

The northern end of Stanwell Park Beach, north of the lagoon, is where Wollongong City Council lets dogs off the leash at any time of day. Backed by the escarpment and fronted by a long open beach, the green zone sits at the quiet end of a village that sees plenty of weekend traffic further south, which makes it a favourite for locals with dogs that need room.

Leash status

Inside the green zone dogs are off leash around the clock, though leashes go back on for the pathways to and from the sand. The colour coded system continues south of the lagoon: orange zones are time shared on leash, before 9am and after 6pm in summer and after 4pm in winter, while red zones near the patrolled flags are prohibited to dogs at all times.

In practice that means the northern green zone is the place for a proper off leash run, and you should check the signage at each access track before letting go, because the boundaries sit close to the lagoon mouth and shift with the seasons. Council signage is the authority if the zones on the ground differ from older maps.

While you're out there

The lagoon crossing is part of the experience: after rain it can run deep enough that small dogs get a swim whether they planned one or not, and in dry spells it is usually an easy paddle across. The beach itself is wide and firm near the waterline, good for long ball sessions, and the escarpment gives the whole run a dramatic backdrop. Swimmers should stay clear of the flagged patrolled area, which is a red zone for dogs. Dogs that love a swim will find the shallows near the lagoon mouth the easiest entry point.

Parking sits along the beachside streets near the reserve, with a short walk down to the sand at the northern end. Weekday mornings are the quiet window; on summer weekends arrive early because the village fills with day trippers, and an early start beats the heat in January too.
