Lorne Dog Beach

Lorne Dog Beach is the northern stretch of Lorne's main beach, starting north of Doble Street and running toward the Swing Bridge. It is the one section of this busy Great Ocean Road town where dogs can run off lead on sand, and the calmer water plus the river entrance make it a genuine swimming spot rather than a token strip of coast.

Leash status

Off-lead exercise is permitted north of Doble Street, with dogs voice-controlled and in sight at all times. The central section of Lorne Beach, between Grove Road and south of Bay Street, is strictly no-dogs, as is Lorne Pier, and every other public space in the township requires a lead. Registration tags must be worn, waste goes in the bins provided, and fines apply for non-compliance. During peak summer from December through February and across Easter, time-share restrictions often apply between 9am and 7pm, so check current signage before you set up.

Water and terrain

The zone is proper sandy beach with easy water access, widest at low tide when the running room opens up. Rock pools along the northern stretches give dogs a shallow, sheltered area to explore, and the water is generally calmer than the open surf beaches flanking Lorne, which is why swimmers do so well here.

Max: keep your dog well back from the Erskine River entrance if it is flowing strongly after rain. Calm-looking river mouths along the Great Ocean Road carry deceptively quick currents that pull out to sea, so assess the flow before letting even a confident swimmer in.

Getting there and parking

Lorne sits on the Great Ocean Road roughly two hours from Melbourne. Follow the main road through town and make for the northern beach end near Doble Street; foreshore parking serves both the caravan park side and the beach access tracks. In peak summer weeks the town fills early, so morning arrivals have the easier time of it.

When to go

Low tide plus early morning is the premium combination: maximum sand, calmest water, fewest people. Outside the December to February crunch the beach stays peaceful, and the rock pools are at their best on a low tide either side of midday.
