4WD and Dog Beach Entry

The 4WD and dog beach entry off Terrace Street is the legal vehicle access point to Airforce Beach at Evans Head, and it opens onto one of the North Coast's better dog setups: a long open-sand off-leash run north of the ramp, with firm driving sand underneath. One fact decides your day, because dogs are welcome north of Terrace Street but banned south of it toward the river.

The rules

Richmond Valley Council allows dogs off-leash in the zone that runs up to about 1.3km north of the Airforce Beach access, beginning a short distance from the Terrace Street ramp. South of the access point, toward the river reserve and Chinamans Beach, dogs are prohibited entirely, and the same ban covers Main Beach and Dirawong Reserve. Keep dogs under effective control around vehicles, and note fines start at $110.

The Terrace Street ramp is the only legal vehicle entry, motorbikes are banned, registered 4WDs only, and a 30km/h limit applies with pedestrians holding absolute right of way. Driving stops about 100m short of the coffee rocks at the northern end, a protected feature, and vehicles must stay below the high water mark. Boundaries and seasonal restrictions shift, so read the signage at the entry before unclipping.

The water

Airforce Beach is an open ocean beach, so the surf is real rather than bay-calm. It suits strong swimmers and dogs that like to run the shallows rather than swim out deep. The driving surface firms up at low tide across roughly 4.6km, and the same firm sand makes the easiest going for a dog on the move.

What's there

Beach parking sits at the Terrace Street entrance and fills fast at peak times. Public toilets and showers are nearby for the post-beach cleanup, and the stretch is a well-known fishing and walking beach, so expect company on weekends. Signposted pied oystercatcher nesting zones are restricted, so keep dogs clear where posted.

Max: vehicles and loose dogs share the same entry lane. Keep your dog leashed and close through the access zone until you are well clear onto the open off-leash sand.

Getting there

Drive to the end of Terrace Street in Evans Head for the entry ramp. It is about 30 to 35 minutes south of Ballina via the Pacific Highway and Woodburn-Evans Head Road, or roughly 50 to 60 minutes south of Byron Bay. No beach driving permit is needed for registered vehicles.

When to go

Low tide for firm sand, midweek for space. School holidays and summer weekends pack the beach with families and 4WDs, so an early or midweek run gives your dog the most room. Watch the swell and keep an unclipped dog away from the access lane at all times.
