Riverside Gardens Dog Beach

Riverside Gardens Dog Beach sits on the Swan River foreshore off King William Street in Bayswater, and it is one of the most complete dog spots in Perth's inner north-east: sandy river access for swimming, wide grassy flats for running, and a fenced exercise zone right next door for dogs that need a boundary. The reserve, public toilets, BBQs and picnic shelters are all in one reach.

Leash status

The beach and the Riverside Gardens East grass area are designated dog exercise areas under the City of Bayswater, available around the clock. Dogs run off-leash there, but the rules tighten as you move through the rest of the reserve: leads go on west of the toilet block, near the playground, and around the coffee van and food truck setups, and dogs are never allowed in the children's playground. Effective voice control applies even where the lead comes off, and you are expected to carry a physical leash the whole time and bag waste straight into the bins provided.

Water and terrain

The entry is a sandy, gently sloping beach straight into the Swan River, an easy swim for most dogs and calm enough for reluctant paddlers. It is river water rather than surf, so tides matter less than rainfall and season. On very hot afternoons the shallows can warm up, which irritates some dogs' skin, so a rinse off at the tap after a swim is worth the bother. The grassy flats behind the beach give room for fetch away from the waterline.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at King William Street, Bayswater WA 6053, with more than fifty free bays including ACROD spots, though the car park fills on weekend mornings. Bayswater train station is a 10 to 15 minute walk away if you would rather arrive on foot along the foreshore.

Worth knowing

Between the river, the grass and the fenced zone, this spot absorbs a crowd better than most, and mature trees shade much of the lawn. Coffee vans and food trucks turn up on weekend mornings, which is part of the draw but also the cue to keep dogs on-lead near the picnic areas. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the busiest window; weekday mornings and late afternoons stay quieter.

When to go

Summer mornings before the shallows warm up are the best swimming conditions, and any weekday outside peak hours will leave you plenty of room on the grass. The reserve is accessible all day, so after-work swims are a reliable fallback.
