Wild Dog Rd Beach

Wild Dog Rd Beach is the long surf beach that starts at the Wild Dog Creek car park a couple of kilometres east of Apollo Bay, where a creek outlet cuts through the sand and the crowds thin out fast. It is the stretch locals use for beach walks with the dog: open sand, a bit of swell, and none of the summer density of the main town beach.

Leash status

Outside the restricted windows, this stretch allows dogs off-leash under effective voice control. It sits outside the main Apollo Bay town beach zone, which bans dogs from 9am to 7pm between 24 December and 30 April, but coastal rules shift along the Great Ocean Road, so read the signage at the car park each visit rather than assuming. Hard lines to respect: Great Otway National Park sections nearby are no-dogs at all times, and fenced hooded plover nesting areas, active roughly September to March, must be given a wide berth. There are no bins guaranteed along the sand, so carry bags and pack everything out.

Water and terrain

This is a natural surf beach with a creek and river outlet at one end, so expect real waves rather than flat bay water. Low tide is the better visit by far: the sand opens up for a long walk and dogs get room to run, while high tide pushes the water towards the dune line and narrows things considerably. Facilities are minimal, so bring water for your dog and anything else you need for a longer stay.

Getting there and parking

From Apollo Bay's town centre it is a two to three minute drive east along the Great Ocean Road to the Wild Dog Creek car park, which includes wheelchair-accessible parking. On foot, allow twenty to thirty minutes along the coastal path or the beach itself. V/Line buses run the Great Ocean Road, but a car is far more practical with dog gear.

Worth knowing

The creek outlet is the spot most dogs make a beeline for, and it also draws fishers and swimmers, so keep an eye on where your dog splashes. The beach stays noticeably quieter than the town beach even in peak season, though holiday weeks still bring company.

When to go

In summer, early morning before 9am and evening after 7pm are the safest windows and the most comfortable for a surf dog. Outside the peak season the whole day is open. Aim for low tide if your dog needs running space.

While you're out there

The other listed spot in Apollo Bay is the Wild Dog Creek Beach Car Park access, and if you are working the coast road, the Lorne Dog Beach is the next established dog beach heading north-east. In town, the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse pours in a proper beer garden that takes dogs.
