Wild Dog Rd Beach

Wild Dog Rd Beach is the long surf beach that runs from the Wild Dog Creek car park east of Apollo Bay, a scenic run of sand with a river outlet that draws swimmers and surfers but stays noticeably quieter than the main town beach.

The rules. Outside peak times, dogs are welcome off-leash under effective voice control. Between 24 December and 30 April the main town beach bans dogs from 9am to 7pm, and while this stretch generally has more flexibility, check the signage on arrival as rules can shift along the coast. Great Otway National Park sections nearby are off-limits to dogs, and hooded plover nesting areas (roughly September to March) are fenced off and must be avoided. Bring your own bags and pack out all waste.

The water and terrain. This is a natural surf beach with a river estuary at one end, best explored at low tide when there is far more sand to work with. Facilities are limited, so carry water for your dog rather than relying on anything on-site.

Getting there. By car it is a short two to three minute drive east from the Apollo Bay town centre along the Great Ocean Road, with a dedicated wheelchair-accessible car park. On foot, allow twenty to thirty minutes along the coastal path or beach from town. V/Line buses run the Great Ocean Road route, but a car is far more practical with dog gear.

Nearby with the dogs. The Emu Cafe at Wildlife Wonders, five minutes north, has a covered outdoor eating area that welcomes dogs. The Great Ocean Road Brewhouse in town has a proper beer garden. For accommodation, Marengo Family Caravan Park is a pet-friendly, beachfront option five to seven minutes away, and Hideaway Cottage offers a pet-friendly, secluded retreat further inland.

When to go. Early morning before 9am or evening after 7pm gives the most breathing room in summer, and low tide is the better window for a longer walk near the estuary. Skip the middle of the day on long weekends between December and April, when the whole region fills up. Good for dogs that prefer a proper stretch of surf beach over a crowded town strip.
