Wild Dog Creek Beach Car Park sits on the ocean side of the Great Ocean Road just east of Apollo Bay, marking the start of a quieter stretch of sand than the main town beach. A creek mouth runs along one end, the car park sits close to the sand, and there is generally room for a dog to move properly without threading through crowds.

Leash status

Dogs are allowed off-leash on this stretch provided they stay under effective control, with the car park and the access path down to the sand remaining on-leash territory. The shire applies seasonal restrictions across the Apollo Bay beaches from late December to the end of April, generally between 9am and 7pm, so summer visits work best early in the morning or later in the evening.

The dunes are out of bounds entirely, including any area signed for nesting shorebirds such as hooded plovers, and those zones shift from season to season. Check the signage at the car park before unclipping, because the boundaries are managed on the ground rather than published as a fixed map.

Water and terrain

The beach faces open ocean, so conditions depend heavily on the day, but the creek mouth gives dogs a calm, shallow option when the surf is up. At low tide there is a wide run of firm sand; at high tide the water pushes back towards the vegetation and the usable strip narrows. The sand is soft rather than flat-packed, so it is a paddling and exploring beach more than a sprinting one.

Max: the hooded plover zones are easy to miss when you are watching the water instead of the dunes. Read the signs at the top of the path before you let go of the lead.

Getting there and parking

The car park sits directly on the Great Ocean Road, immediately east of the Apollo Bay township on the ocean side. Parking is free, bitumen-sealed and generally plentiful outside the peak summer and Easter weeks, with direct access onto the beach. V/Line coaches run along the Great Ocean Road if you are without a car, but with dog gear and towels involved, driving makes far more sense.

Worth knowing

Facilities at the car park itself are minimal, so bring your own water and waste bags. The main township is about five minutes away with toilets, bins and shops when you need them. Access from the car park onto the sand is direct and the surface is wheelchair friendly, which makes this one of the easier beach entries on this part of the coast.

When to go

Early mornings are the standout window for most of the year, and that holds especially true across the restricted summer stretch when the daytime hours close off. Weekdays outside school holidays leave the beach close to empty, and the creek mouth holds shallow water long after the tide turns.
