Wild dog creek beach car park

Wild Dog Creek Beach Car Park sits at the eastern edge of Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road, a quieter stretch of sand than the main town beach, with a creek mouth at one end and enough room to let a dog stretch out properly.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash here provided they are under effective control. Between 24 December and 30 April, seasonal restrictions apply, generally in force from 9am to 7pm, so plan around early mornings or evenings if you are visiting over summer. Keep dogs on a leash in the car park and on the access path down to the sand, and stay off the dunes entirely, including any area marked for nesting shorebirds such as hooded plovers.

What's there. The car park is bitumen and wheelchair-accessible, with direct access onto the beach. Facilities on-site are minimal, so bring your own water and waste bags. The main Apollo Bay township, with its shops, toilets and bins, is about a five-minute drive away.

Getting there. The car park sits right on the Great Ocean Road, immediately east of town on the ocean side. Parking is free and usually plentiful, though it fills on sunny weekends over the Christmas and Easter periods. V/Line buses run along the Great Ocean Road if you are without a car, but driving makes far more sense with dog gear in tow.

Nearby with the dogs. Icaro on Moore St has dog-friendly outdoor tables, the Emu Cafe at Wildlife Wonders has a dog-friendly courtyard, and the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse has a rear beer garden and even a dog-specific beer on tap. For a stay, Bimbi Park takes pets in cabins and camping, and Marengo Holiday Park has pet-friendly sites close to the beach.

When to go. Low tide opens up the most sand for a proper run, and outside the Dec-Apr restriction window you have the place largely to yourselves any time of day. In summer, aim for before 9am or after 7pm. Good for dogs that want space to sprint rather than a packed town beach scene.
